GW Lisner Auditorium presents Tribute to Andy Palacio The Garifuna Collective/Umalali/+ special guests
FREE EVENT! NO TICKETS REQUIRED.
The all-star Garifuna Collective and members of the women's group
Umalali will tour the US to commemorate the life
and music of the late Andy Palacio, the legendary Belizean artist and
Garifuna cultural ambassador who passed away suddenly on January 19th.
Their soulful music from the Caribbean coast of Central America
(Belize, Honduras, Guatemala) blends West African, Arawak Indian and
European influences. The program ranges from the Garifuna Collective's
vibrant songs, which have been described as “one of the sensations of
African diaspora pop” (Afropop), to the beauty and power of
Garifuna female expression. Featured artists in the Garifuna Collective
include Aurelio Martinez, an amazing young singer from Honduras; Adrian
Martinez, a rising star in Belize; and popular young Belizean artist
Lloyd Augustine, a punta rocker and parandero supreme. The women of Umalali will perform selections from their new CD, Umalali, The Garifuna Women's Project (Cumbancha).
